Case Study: Integrated Design of a Handheld Hyperspectral Imaging Camera

Michael Paloian (President, Integrated Design Systems, Inc.)

Location: 210B

Date: Tuesday, February 5

Time: 3:15pm - 4:00pm

Track: MD&M West: Product Development & User-Centered Design

Vault Recording: TBD

The handheld hyperspectral imaging camera is a first-of-its-kind medical device that graphically maps subcutaneous oxygenated blood, providing physicians with invaluable data directly correlating to tissue health. This presentation will review the design evolution, starting with initial exploratory concepts and clinical research, and proceeding through engineering development, simulation, testing, production liaison, and final production units.
We’ll emphasize the synergistic benefits of integrating industrial design and engineering within a highly aggressive schedule.

Topics covered include:
  • A description of the initial research, including a brief review of the principles behind the technology, clinical studies, and concept evaluations
  • A review of the transformation of the selected concept to a production product based on compliance with numerous design parameters
  • Decisions for plastic material selection, process selection, ergonomics, aesthetics, and numerous performance requirements
  • Discussion pertaining to plastic part design based on considerations for molding and processing
