About 80% of the biomaterials the medical devices industry currently uses are from 15 to 20 years old. What exactly is stopping the industry from using something newer, more advanced, and maybe even safer? Today, biomaterials design as a field is much vaster in scope and pursues its goals by not only designing new chemistries, but also by developing the adequate processing and the necessary testing.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Challenges with incorporating novel biomaterials and using them on the actual device for human use
  • Existing hurdles and directions in biomaterials research in industry, including synthetic replacements and designing adequate test methods for new materials
  • Materials processing into specific size, shape, surface texture and how that process may impact the mechanical and biological properties
  • Examples demonstrating the significance of retesting the mechanical and chemical properties at the component level for biological activity or stability
