As the largest organ of the body, skin is a conformal sensory system that can detect pressure, temperature, texture, etc.; thus, allows us to interact with the surrounding environment. However, due to its stretchable and conformal structure, it has been a major challenge to develop transducers that can mimic the skin. Recently, the Bao Lab on Design and Development at Stanford has developed a method to shape organic-based electronic materials to develop stretchable sensors mimicking skin functions and sense critical information such as pressure. This method can be applied to wide range of medical applications from prosthetic limbs to biodegradable sensors.
