Lessons from Silicon Valley: Adopting Modularity for New Product Development

Vault Recording: TBD

Modularity in medical and surgical device design can bring both economic and technical advantages to design and product development. Product managers have an advantage if their product portfolio has both interchangeable and replaceable or reusable parts and sections. If there are multiple sub-markets for your hardware platform, creating a device in a modular fashion can help customers put configurations together to meet variable needs. Viewing your product as part of the hospital ecosystem, rather than as an individual device, brings distinct advantages and can save time and money.

Topics covered include:
  • Overcoming design challenges by understanding the footprint of your product in the OR workflow
  • How to gain efficiencies and save money during design and manufacturing
  • How modularity can involve using IoT connectivity to meet hospital and market demands (i.e., EMR integration)
  • Case examples of Galen Robotic's product development process
  • Steps product managers can take to develop a short list for modularity
