Erik EdwardsSenior Research ScientistBattelle

Dr. Erik Edwards is a Senior Research Scientist focused on advanced materials research within Battelle’s Consumer, Industrial and Medical Technologies group. He specializes in challenging research and development problems that sit at the intersection of chemical engineering, biochemistry and materials science. In his ten years at Battelle Dr. Edwards has performed multiple projects to develop materials and processes to improve the manufacturing and performance of biomolecules in medical devices and materials. These have involved generating highly functional materials that improve the performance of proteins embedded in biosensors, developing manufacturing processes that are capable of depositing small volumes of highly valuable materials for diagnostic purposes, and the development of materials and devices for advanced wound healing applications in the military medical field. Before coming to Battelle Dr. Edwards was a post-doctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Colloids and Interfaces. During his time as a post-doc he was also a research fellow with the Alexander von Humboldt foundation, which funds 1-2 year research experiences for foreigners in Germany. His work there focused on synthesizing nanoparticles that were coated with polymers that allowed them to cross complex interfaces, for applications in drug delivery. His Ph.D. work at the University of Wisconsin was focused on creating chemical patters with sub-50 dimensions to direct the behavior of self-assembling materials. Dr. Edwards holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State University and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
