When Quality Assurance Organizations Reduce Overall Quality

Tom Ulrich, PhD  (Chief Scientist, Tandem Diabetes Care)

Location: 210D

Date: Wednesday, February 12

Time: 3:15 pm - 5:00 pm

Track: MD&M Conference: Understanding the Impact of Recent Changes to Quality Standards (in partnership with AAMI)

Vault Recording: TBD

Quality Assurance professionals, consultants, and auditors often advocate having a simple, measurable response to every problem, hence updating a procedure usually makes everyone feel as if they have addressed the problem. But does this really cause change? Or does this merely create the illusion that the problem has been addressed? In this presentation, Dr. Tom Ulrich synthesizes the latest research in the fields of leadership, perception, and error management culture to suggest that, in many cases, this programmed response may be causing more harm than good. As such, this presentation may cause you to rethink your approach to quality assurance.

Topics covered include:

  • A look at both evidence from literature as well as several case studies that suggest how common QA practices can be problematic
  • How you can improve your own internal quality program by using better QA practices developed through this research
  • Implementing a strong quality system within your own organization
